Used to be I’d get on a plane as happily and easily as boarding a bus. Then, around my 30th birthday, I suddenly developed a fear of flying. For that same birthday, I unexpectedly received a gift I had requested for my 18th birthday: a flying lesson. I took the lesson, and it helped my fear considerably, as my fear had as its primary source a heightened awareness of all that might go wrong during flight and a keen sense of my own ignorance of what would need to be done if it did.
