"The Venice I Know" isn't a typical guidebook. Margie Miklas weaves her own experiences within the pages and paints a vibrant and enchanting picture of the lagoon city. Miklas'charming writing style and her obvious love for Venice coupled with practical tips and endorsements make this volume a valuable asset for anyone planning a trip to Venice. I really don’t get this book. I’m a frequent traveler to Venice and lived there for a bit in graduate school. When I saw the title I thought this was going to be an interesting account of someone’s intimate knowledge of Venice. It’s not. It’s basically the account of a woman who goes on short trips to Venice and experiences what every tourist experiences - granted there’s a twist - about 90% of the things she writes about SHE DOESN’T EVEN EXPERIENCE! She’ll write about something but then admit she didn’t visit what she wrote about or say it’s on her bucket list to do/experience on the next trip! It’s basically a book report on the travel guides or blogs she’s read. The experiences she does have are pretty common and cliche....nothing new here. I don’t understand the need or the motivation to give a Christian and surname for several people who appear in the book. I understand doing so for businesses but is it really necessary for intimate relationships and family members? It’s very odd. Finally I have to say the writing style is strange to me. It starts out reading charming and naive....then gets a bit tiresome...and then becomes full on annoying. Many of the chapters end with thanking the people she wrote about or some corny “let’s go!” kinda phrase. I read though the entire book because I love Venice but I won’t read it again, recommend it or keep it on my shelf. Instead of this book I would recommend a standard travel guide.
